Belize: A Hidden Gem I Can’t Stop Recommending

Nestled between Mexico and Guatemala, Belize is a small country with an abundance of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and thrilling adventures waiting to be discovered. From its pristine beaches and lush rainforests, to its rich history and diverse wildlife, Belize captivates visitors with its charm and allure. My husband and I went to Belize for the first time on our honeymoon, and like many before us, we fell in love with the country. Belize has captured my heart and this is why I can't stop recommending it to everyone I meet:

Unspoiled Natural Beauty: Belize is a paradise for nature lovers, boasting an array of stunning landscapes and ecosystems. The country is home to the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world, offering world-class diving and snorkeling experiences. Explore colorful coral gardens, swim with exotic marine life, discover hidden underwater caves and tunnels, or simply lay out on their beautiful beaches. We made the choice to stay in the jungle, rather than on the beach. So we found ourselves a stunning self-sustaining eco-lodge, located on an orchard of tropical fruit, and excursions full of grand adventure. 

Rich Cultural Heritage: Belize's cultural tapestry is as diverse as its natural wonders. With influences from Maya, Garifuna, Mestizo, and Creole communities, the country's cultural heritage is rich and vibrant. Immerse yourself in the rhythms of traditional Garifuna drumming, explore ancient Maya ruins, and savor the flavors of Belizean cuisine, a delicious fusion of Caribbean, Mexican, and Central American flavors. One of our favorite cultural experiences of the trip was our horseback ride to Xunantunich, and tour of the ruins.

Adventure Awaits: Whether you're seeking adrenaline-pumping thrills or serene moments of tranquility, Belize offers something for everyone. Embark on a jungle trek through lush rainforests, zip-line over canopy treetops, or kayak through winding rivers and caves. For the ultimate adventure, explore the vast network of caves and underground rivers, where you can tube, swim, spelunk, and marvel at ancient rock formations. The highlight of our trip was spelunking in Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave. We started by repelling down into the mouth of the cave, and continuing into the tight, dark depths of the cave. It was nothing like we have ever experienced before and even with my claustrophobia, and my husband’s fear of heights, we completed the excursion with thrilling enthusiasm. However, I would not recommend this activity to a person with more severe claustrophobia. 

Warm Hospitality: One of the highlights of visiting Belize is the warm hospitality of its people. Belizeans are known for their friendly demeanor, welcoming smiles, and genuine kindness towards visitors. Whether you're chatting with locals at a roadside stall or being greeted by the staff at your accommodation, you'll feel right at home in Belize. We noticed this kindness right away after we landed, when our pre-arranged transportation was not at the airport when we arrived. A handful of taxi drivers noticed we were waiting, and couldn't use our phones in a foreign country, and immediately took action to find out where our driver was. There was another instance where our hotel staff gave us a ride into town so we didn't have to wait for a bus. Every interaction we had with the locals was met with kindness I have never come across again in my travels. 

Low cost to visit: The increasingly low cost of living in Belize is mirrored in its budget-friendly travel industry. Exploring this beautiful country on a limited budget for a two-week period is entirely feasible. Anticipate a total cost ranging from $1,100 to $1,400 for the entire duration, covering accommodation expenses. If opting for hotels or lodges during your stay, it's advisable to budget an additional $20 to $30 per night for lodging. With such reasonable expenses, travelers can enjoy an affordable yet enriching experience in Belize without overspending. Our stay was $2000 (for 2 people in 2017) for a week.
